Breather for readers: JNU library to remain open 24x7

Earlier, the library was open for the students only between 9 am and 12 midnight.  ‘The move meets a long standing demand of JNU students who wanted the library’s working hours to be extended. It is a residential university, hence JNU has extended the timing to support research scholars and others who want to access it during the night as well,’ chief librarian RC Gaur said.

‘The reading hall facility will henceforth be available for 21 hours – from 9 am to 6 am the next day. The hall will remain closed for 3 hours, from 6 am to 9 am, for maintenance and cleaning purposes,’ Gaur added.

The chief librarian also informed earlier the library could not remain open round-the-clock because of lack of infrastructure. ‘For example, there weren’t enough plug points for students to charge their laptops. After working on setting up basic amenities, we have decided to initiate the step. Now, the newly-renovated reading hall has a sitting capacity of 128 students and there are plug points near every seat to charge laptops,’ he said.

The Central Library has a diverse collection of more than 5 lakh books and subscribes to more than 50 online databases.  Apart from this, the library has a rich collection of more than 1 lakh e-books spanning different disciplines. The library will now provide access to all the online resources subscribed from anywhere to all JNU students. Earlier, such access was available only within the campus.

JNU VC Sudhir K Sopory will inaugurate the newly-renovated reading hall on the ground floor of the Central Library on 3 February.
