Border stand-off continues, China pitches for flag meet

The development is being viewed in some quarters as China climbing down from its stiff position as the Indian Army had decided not to ask for another flag meeting after two previous attempts to end the stalemate failed.

‘Diplomacy is at work quietly. We are confident that border security is in good hands,’ said ministry of external affairs spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin on Tuesday. The Chinese side has asked for the meeting and their request is under consideration, army sources said. The army is keeping a close eye on the movement of Chinese troops in the area and the units in the adjoining areas have also been asked to remain on alert, he said.

The two flag meetings in the last 10 days made no progress in resolving the crisis. Against this backdrop, army chief Dalbir Singh Suhag cancelled his four-day trip to Bhutan on Monday.

Tension in the area erupted on Sunday when some Chinese workers, who were constructing a road on their side, crossed into the Indian side and also claimed that they had orders to build a road up to Tible, 5-km deep inside Indian territory.
