Bookworms of Delhi, Ahoy!

'There is no friend as loyal as a book,' said Ernest Hemingway. For the American author, nothing was as precious as books. Nothing expands your horizons and keeps you entertained at the same time as nicely as books do.

With such a belief in mind, Cinedarbaar and the National Book Trust, India (NBT) is organising Qitaabe which is a celebration of National Book Week, in the Capital. The aim is to promote and encourage book reading and literature among the masses. The three-day gala will be  inaugurated by M A Sikander, director, National Book Trust.

A host of activities have been planned to bring people closer to the world of books and inculcate book reading habits in people.

'The event's primary purpose is to sensitise people with good reading habits since in metropolitan cities reading habits are next to nil. The core issue is to bring people closer to books,' said M A Sikander.

'We have never organised such an event at a shopping mall in Delhi. It has been held at schools and colleges earlier. It's an experiment to encourage a different demographic altogether and inculcate reading habits. The one month project will host many fun and ingenious activities for everyone,' said Supriya Suri, creative director, Cinedarbaar.

The activities will be centered around books and literature.
Waves,
a compilation of short stories written exclusively by children in the age group of 13 -17 years and published by Cinedarbaar, will also be launched.

'Waves
is the result of extensive workshops organised by Cinedarbaar and NBT for school students on creative writing,' added Suri.

Qitaabe is a one of a kind literary event which will be full of innovative experiments and activities throughout the three days.

The highlight at the event will be a library which will have 150 exclusive books by Penguin which will be available to the visitors to read.

A storytelling session by Simi Srivastava from Kathashala has also been organised. She will be narrating stories in fun and innovative ways. Other workshop highlights include sounds and poems, an activity to observe the urban sounds of the mall and creating poems; treasure hunt, which is a fun way to crack the clues and learn about literature in the process.

Just in case it seems the event is solely dedicated to children, here is the surprise. There are other intriguing and engaging activities for the young and old alike. Poetree installation, for instance, is a tree for people to write poems and hang them on the tree for the world to read.

Weave a Yarn is a collaborative project where people continue each other’s stories on a big white canvas. For all the families visiting the mall, there is an exciting treasure hunt based on books, storytelling and literature.
