Books on self-styled godmen selling like hot cakes at Book Fair

Asaram Bapu’s publications are not the only ones that are selling like hot cakes at the ongoing global book fair in Delhi, literature on other godmen also seem to have many takers. Books written by self-styled Godmen priced as low as Rs 20, have reported brisk sales. In addition to the paid copies there are pamphlets on ahimsa, nirvana and vegetarianism which are being distributed free.

Vashudha, a volunteer selling Asaram Bapu’s books, said, “Bapu has authored over 100 books in many languages including English and Hindi.  At our stall his magazine Rishi Prasad is a great hit.”
“Started in 1990, Rishi Prasad periodical has now become the largest circulated spiritual monthly publication in the world with more than 10 million readers,” claimed Asaram Bapu’s devotees.

The stall belonging to controversial Karnataka Godman Nithyananda, has interesting sounding titles like “Ghar Wapasi” on offer. On sale is literature not just in print but also digital format. Geeta, a devotee of Nityananda when asked about the “Ghar Wapsi” title said, “The stall has largely titles on spirituality and religion though there are some by revolutionary writers also.” This was her explanation on titles like “Ghar Wapasi” being revolutionary.

“Through our efforts and books, we try to motivate people and promote whatever is good in our religion and we don’t intend to harm anyone,” added Nithyananda’s believer.

Divya Jyoti Jagrati Sansthan, the organization headed by another controversial godman Ashutoshji Maharaj, offered books on the controversial guru at discounted prices. Ashutosh Maharaj’s death and Samadhi last year invited much media attention. “We also print a monthly magazine, a monthly book for children’s mental development,” said a volunteer representing the stall.

Such literature is not limited to any one religion. There were stalls set-up by Maktaba Tul Madinah, Nure Quran Foundation and Imamia Youth Foundation selling books on Islamic literature.
