‘Book & prosecute banned app-based cab services’

Delhi Traffic Police has asked its officials to download the mobile application for banned application-based cab services — including Uber, Ola and Taxi for Sure — allegedly operating in Delhi clandestinely in order to beat them in their own game. And in the first 24 hours, as many as 158 cabs were prosecuted and 120 out of them were impounded by the police, said a senior official on Wednesday.

“The traffic inspectors were asked to book cabs and when they arrived, they were prosecuted. We are also about to write to the Transport Department, asking them to cancel their permits for the offence,” said Muktesh Chander, Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic).

He further <g data-gr-id="24">said,</g> <g data-gr-id="22">liability</g> of the company <g data-gr-id="23">(Uber,Ola</g> or Taxi for Sure) will also be fixed under Sections 93(1), 193 and 199 MV Act. Kalandara will be made and sent to court against the Company apart from prosecuting the driver.

Earlier this year, the Transport Department in Delhi had banned the app-based taxi services Uber,
Ola and Taxi For Sure from operating with effect from January 1.

They were banned in the national capital following the alleged rape of a 26-year-old financial consultant by <g data-gr-id="20">an Uber</g> cabbie in December 2014.

The government has also issued directions for blocking their websites and the mobile applications for availing these services. But still these taxi services continue to operate in Delhi clandestinely, Chander added.
