Body to protect consumer interests inefficient: Govt

In a shocking acceptance of institutional inefficiency, Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC), additional secretary of consumer affairs department, G Gurucharan, has said, ‘The board members of CCPC are just in the habit of meeting, greeting and treating themselves.’

The one at the receiving end is definitely the consumer. However, Gurucharan said that the government is in process of amending consumer protection act and is getting sound suggestions from several quarters. ‘The consumer protection act is an excellent legislation, but now it has become outdated. We are undertaking comprehensive suggestions to amend the act. One of the amendments will help e-commerce, retailing and direct selling industries,’ he said.

Gurucharan was speaking on the occasion of launching The Aware Consume, a magazine on consumers’ rights. The magazine was launched by Keshav Desiraju, the consumer affairs secretary.

Desiraju expressed displeasure over the performance of consumer courts in the country. He said, ‘The consumer protection act has not served in the way it should have done. The issue of bad consumer procedure comes up. However, these consumer courts are constituted very carefully.

Despite that there are unsatisfactory outputs, poor disposal rate by courts, and also excessive reliance on civil courts, and they provide very little attention to individual consumers who are fighting cases.’
