Blazing Swamy stops just short of naming Jaitley

In a posting on the micro-blogging site on Friday, Swamy said “BJP should direct our ministers to wear traditional Indian clothes while abroad. In coat and tie they look like waiters.”

The posting stopped short of naming Jaitley, who during official sojourns abroad often wears business suits.  Photos of the Finance Minister’s of meeting with the Bank of China Chairman in Beijing wearing a business suit appeared in several newspapers on Friday morning.

Swamy earlier in his postings had gone hammer and tongs against the members of Jaitley’s team including Reserve Bank governor Raghuram Rajan, Chief Economic Adviser Arvind Subramaniam and Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das. Though Jaitley has defended his team neither BJP president Amit Shah nor Prime Minister Narendra Modi have tried to rein in Swamy.

This has given an impression that Swamy’s sustained attack could be part of a design to undermine Arun Jaitley’s position within the government and the party. As of now Jaitley wields power only next to the Prime Minister in the Modi government.

Despite Swamy’s twitter offensive on Friday, BJP’s reaction was strangely muted. Senior party leaders briefed reporters on Friday saying it was going to take suo motu cognizance on the newly nominated Rajya Sabha MP, whatever that meant.

A senior BJP leader said, “We will ask our party president to ask Swamy to maintain restraint. If he has to say something, it can be discussed on the party platform. Raising voice in a public forum is creating trouble for the party.”

However, an unfazed Swamy did not stop at that and tweeted again saying “People giving me advice on discipline and restraint don’t realize that if I disregard discipline there would be a blood bath.”
