Three days after the biggest blackout in the city due to power grid failure, which created a lot of hindrance for public traveling in the Metro, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has come up with initiatives to generate renewable energy sources.
The step will not only reduce its dependence on non-renewable sources of power, it will also be environment-friendly.
In consultation with the the state government, solar panels are being installed at Dwarka Sector 21, Yamuna Bank & Yamuna Bank Depot stations in the initial phase. Delhi Metro plans to harness solar energy at elevated Metro stations, depots and open areas at stations.
DMRC spokesperson Anuj Dayal said, ‘Based on the success of the initiative, DMRC will plan it further for its upcoming Phase III structures.’
Confirming the report, Dayal said, ‘The 64-panel five-kilowatt (KW) solar power plant installed at the Metro Headquarters (Metro Bhawan) at Barakhamba Road has a capacity of generating 15 Kilowatt hour (KWh) electricity per day, saving 2.35 tons of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions per year.’
The solar power plant presently caters to the need of lighting electrical equipment, including the terrace lightings at Metro Bhawan from dusk to dawn.
‘DMRC first initiated the urban deployment of Solar PV systems, which were so far considered suitable for remote areas only. The system provided electricity for parking area lighting of Patel Chowk and Tagore Garden stations, saving 7446 KWH energy per annum. We used the solar energy for its IT Park and LED street lightings along Patel Chowk and Chandni Chowk Metro stations,’ said a DMRC official.
He said the paramount aim was to protect the environment with appropriate procedures and control measures. ‘DMRC will continually improve its environmental performance and conduct its activities in an environmentally responsible manner, clearly reflecting a commitment to foster sustainable development,’ the officials added.
