Around 100 supporters of the Bharatiya Kishan Union (BKU) stopped toll collection of the DND Flyway for approximately five hours on Thursday demanding roll back of recent hike in toll rates.
‘We lost around Rs 7-8 lakhs due to the protest as no toll could be collected between 9.30 am to 3.30 pm on Thursday,’ said a spokesperson for the DND Flyway. ‘Around 30,000 vehicles crossed the toll plaza from Delhi to Noida and Noida to Delhi in these five hours,’ he added.
The protesters under the leadership of Rakesh Tikait reached the toll plaza at approximately 9 am and managed to stop collections at the toll plaza within half an hour. As the protest was planned and announced, heavy police force and PAC were deployed at the site but they proved to be mute spectators.
‘The authorities are not paying heed to our demands to reduce the toll rates. We have no option but to stop collection of toll,’ said Rakesh Tikait, general secretary of BKU.
He further added that the toll rates are unjustified and demanded the government to take control of the toll collection from the company as the cost of construction had already been recovered.
