The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) may loose power in South DMC as the opposition Congress has indicated to support any Non-BJP candidate for the coveted post of mayor. The indication became stronger on Tuesday as party candidates frayed for the post of mayor and deputy mayor in East DMC where BJP is in full majority.
‘We will either field our candidate or support any Non-BJP candidate for the post of mayor,’ said Virender Kasana, Congress councillor to Millennium Post. Kasana is considered front runner for the post of mayor candidate from Congress. ‘The name of candidates has not been finalised yet but we will fray candidates for the coveted posts of mayor, deputy mayor and standing committee chairman,’ added Kasana.
Besides NCP, BSP, SP, INLD and Independents he also claims to have the support of some BJP councillors who have been marginalised in the party due to change of guard in state BJP.
In the 104 member house of South DMC, BJP is the largest party with 44 councillors eight short of majority in the house. The second largest party Congress, however has 29 seats but as seven MPs and MLAs of the area are also elligilbel for voting the total vote for the Congress reach to 36. The party claims to have support of six councillors of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), five BSP and some independents. There are three councillors of INLD and one each of RLD, Samajwadi Party and JDU. But the entire game depends on 14 independent candidates.
‘The congress is day dreaming and every leader had the right to do so. Last year they also had fielded their candidate for the post of mayor but lost the seat badly,’ said Rajesh Gehlot, chairman of standing committee in South DMC. The BJP had 70 votes in the mayor election last year. ‘This time too our mayor candidate will win with record margin,’ claimed Gehlot. He claimed support of BSP, INLD, and seven independent councillors besides other. The BJP too claimed to enjoy support of some Congress councillors.
The BJP, however, has not declared the name of its mayor candidate.
