Despite allegations that BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi had tried to influence the outcome of the 2G report, the party kept up its attacking mode on Friday, with both leaders of opposition Sushma Swaraj (Lok Sabha) and Arun Jaitley (Rajya Sabha) disapproving the appointment of CBI director Ranjit Sinha. Swaraj and Jaitley wrote to PM Manmohan Singh saying the appointment should be kept in abeyance as a parliamentary committee on Lokpal has unanimously recommended that it should be done by a collegium.
According to sources, the party is also not going to relent and agree on holding discussion on FDI in retail under rule 193 either. ‘Our stand in the all-party meeting on Monday will be that the debate should be under Rule 184 in Lok Sabha,’ said BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain. The party has also wanted the debate be held under Rule 167 in Rajya Sabha to ensure division of votes. The government has called an all-party meeting on Monday to end the impasse.
The letter written to prime minister on CBI director’s appointment indicts the government of bypassing parliament. ‘The manner in which the government has made this appointment hours before tabling of Lokpal recommendation in Rajya Sabha persuades us to a conclusion that the government wanted to pre-empt the possibility of this recommendation at least in the present appointment,’ the letter said
The government was in no mood to entertain the BJP at least on the issue of the appointment of CBI director. Minister of State for Personnel V Narayanasamy said the appointment has been done in a fair manner following the due process. ‘The PM decided the name of Ranjit Sinha in a fair manner following the due process in which CVC recommended three names. Where is the question of unfairness in this?’ he said.
