It was learnt that Swaraj had suggested the names of former attorney general K Parasaran, former solicitor general Harish Salve or even eminent jurist Fali Sam Nariman instead of Rao. However, in meeting which happened on Monday Swaraj was outvoted 3-1 on the choice of Rao as a member of the Lokpal selection panel. Sources said, BJP was stressing more on Nariman, who is considered as India’s most distinguished constitutional lawyers and awarded with the Padma Bhushan in 1991 and Padma Vibhushan in 2007.
Swaraj said that they are not going to accept PM’s choice of a jurist for the panel that will select the national anti-corruption ombudsman. She said, ‘Yes we will meet the president to protest against the selection. After 40 years we are appointing the Lokpal. Unfortunately, it was not done unanimously.’
Meanwhile, BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi will launch a nationwide ‘chai pe charcha (discussion over tea)’ campaign on 12 February to get maximum number of feedback from people (nearly 2 crore) across the nation considering the upcoming general election. Meanwhile, Arun Jaitley reacted strongly against AAP MLA Madan Lal’s allegation that BJP paid him Rs 20 crore to topple Delhi government, while AAP members staged a protest in front of his Delhi residence.
