BJP to project Narendra Modi as the OBC face of party in Bihar for LS elections

With Other Backward Classes (OBC) constituting about 47 percent of electorate in Bihar, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has decided to portray Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi as the OBC face of the party in the state for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Though Modi is a ‘Ghanchi’ by caste, he has never projected himself as the backward leader and has always tried to project himself as a developmental leader.

However, Modi’s portrayal as a backward leader became imminent after BJP and Janata Dal (united) split in the state and former Bihar deputy chief minister Sushil Modi projecting the Gujarat chief minister as an OBC leader. This move  is being done to counter Bihar chief minister  Nitish Kumar, who is from the OBC Kurmi caste. The BJP leaders are of the opinion that if one adds the non -Yadav and non- Kurmi vote to the BJP which already has the support of upper caste in the state, the  stocks of the party in the state will rise immensely. The party leaders are also hopeful that Modi’s  presence will polarise the Hindu vote towards them.
