BJP sweeps MP civic body polls; Modi, CM thank voters

"MP Civic poll results are gladdening. I thank people of MP for reposing their trust in BJP. I salute efforts of <g data-gr-id="25">karyakartas</g> (workers) and party leaders," Modi tweeted.

"Thank you very much for your continued support and faith. MP will continue to work under your dynamic leadership," Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who has been facing demands for his resignation over the scandal, tweeted.

The elections were held on August 12. "State is moving rapidly on the path of development. It has no place for negative politics. The sooner opposition realises it, the better," Chouhan said in another tweet.

BJP registered victories in Morena, Ujjain, <g data-gr-id="27">Harda</g>, Chakghat in Rewa district, Bhainsdehi in Betul district, Kotar in Satna, <g data-gr-id="28">Suwasara</g> in Mandsaur and Vidisha municipal bodies.

A Congress and an Independent candidate were elected as President of municipalities in Sarangpur in Rajgarh district and <g data-gr-id="26">Guhwara</g> in Chhattarpur district respectively. BJP had swept the civic polls in the state held earlier this year.

PM should also tweet about <g data-gr-id="65">Vyapam :</g> Digvijay
Senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh on Sunday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi should "break his silence" over Vyapam scam and other controversial issues involving BJP ministers and write about these matters on the microblogging site-Twitter. Singh said <g data-gr-id="61">this hours</g> after Modi tweeted about BJP's impressive performance in Madhya Pradesh municipal elections, in which the saffron party won eight out of ten civic bodies. "He (Modi) was prompt and quick on tweeting over the MP civic polls. He should break his silence and tweet over Vyapam scam, Sushma Swaraj, Pankaja Munde involved in wrongdoings," Singh told reporters here. Modi had tweeted, "MP civic poll results are gladdening. I thank people of MP for reposing their trust in BJP. I salute efforts of Karyakartas & party leaders." Taking a dig at Modi, Singh said that he was happy that the PM is now visiting mosques during his foreign trips.

During his UAE visit that commenced on Sunday, Modi is scheduled to kick start his first public engagement with a visit to Shaikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the third largest mosque in the world after the ones in Mecca and Madina in Saudi Arabia. "I am delighted that a person who did not wish to wear a skull <g data-gr-id="64">cap,</g> is visiting a mosque in UAE. It is a good sign," Singh said.  In 2011, when Modi was the Chief Minister of Gujarat, he had refused to put on a skull cap offered by a Muslim cleric during his <g data-gr-id="59">sadbhavana</g> (harmony) fast in Ahmedabad, which had triggered a controversy. His detractors had latched onto the issue to attack him.

BJP asks Cong to introspect after debacle
Buoyed by its success in the Madhya Pradesh civic body polls, where the BJP won eight out of 10 civic bodies despite the Vyapam scam heat, the party on Sunday asked Congress leadership to do "self introspection," while terming the victory as one for politics of development. "The success of BJP is an indication of the development politics... We would like to say Congress Party President Sonia Gandhi and vice president Rahul <g data-gr-id="146">Gandhi Gandhi</g> need to be more practical. They need to do <g data-gr-id="145">self introspection</g>," BJP Spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said here. Trivedi said that the Congress party's chief strategists in Madhya Pradesh, which include both senior leaders as well as youth leaders, also need to reconsider their strategy in the face of defeat in the civic body polls. The stupendous success of the party in these polls is a "reaction" and "anger" of the people of Madhya Pradesh against those who tried to tarnish the image of the party in the state, he said.
