After the ruling Samajwadi Party’s announcement to bring a legislation to provide reservation to Muslims in government jobs, the state is set to witness a showdown on the issue in the coming days as the Bharatiya Janata Party has made it clear that the proposed move would be opposed tooth and nail in and outside the state legislature.
SP general secretary Ramgopal Yadav had said recently that his party’s government was committed to provide reservation to Muslims and to achieve this objective it would introduce a bill in the state legislature in the next session.
The statement has infuriated the BJP, which has announced its opposition to the move.
BJP state spokesman Vijay Bahadur Pathak said that the SP government was adopting a dictatorial attitude.
‘It is well known that religion-based reservation is unconstitutional but in the lure of Muslim votes the SP government is contemplating reservation to Muslims,’ he said.
‘It appears that the Samajwadi Party is desperate to garner Muslim votes in the Lok Sabha election and this is the reason why it plans to bring a legislation that is unconstitutional,’ he added.
The BJP state spokesman said that soon after assuming power, the SP government started to pursue the policy of Muslims appeasement. ‘ Be it providing Rs 30,000 to Muslim girls or releasing terrorists, the decisions of the SP government are purely guided by vote bank politics and this will cause immense harm to the harmony of society,’ he added.
Pathak said the SP government was following in the footsteps of the previous Mayawati government.
‘Just as Mayawati misused the majority and acted as a dictator an set aside rules, regulations and constitutional norms, the SP government is also heading in the same direction but it should remember the fate of Mayawati, who was taught a lesson by the people for her dictatorial attitude’ the BJP state spokesman said.
