BJP MLA from East Delhi shot at, escapes unhurt

Shunty had asked for security cover almost eight months back, after becoming an MLA, which was refused by the concerned authorities. As narrated by Shunty himself, someone rang his door bell at around 5:30 am and as he opened the door, he saw a man wearing a half-sleeved shirt and a helmet. He was carrying a few documents with him, which he wanted to get attested. When the legislator turned to get a pen and his stamp, the unidentified man got hold of his collar and dragged him towards the road.

‘I thought I was going to be abducted but he soon took out a pistol and started firing. I ran and I was fortunate enough to escape the three bullets he fired, after which the assailant fled,’ said Shunty. He further said, it is clearly a ‘paid’ and ‘planned’ act, and the assailant kept asking him ‘not to speak a word’. As narrated by an eye-witness, the unidentified assailant ran towards the park opposite Shunty’s residence, where he also dropped his helmet. He took the lane adjacent to the park, boarded a white Verna car (with a Haryana number-plate) parked near a dairy on the main road and fled the scene.

The police reached the scene after receiving a PCR call from one of Shunty’s neighbours at 5:40 am. Three bullet-shells were recovered from the scene and police are monitoring CCTV footages obtained from the scene, said a police official. He further added that both Crime Branch and Special Cell of Delhi Police will be now investigating it.

According to Shunty, whenever he requested to the concerned authorities – both in the Delhi government and Delhi Police – for security after speculating threat to his life, it was rejected on the ground that it is an affair concerned with the home ministry.

In 2007, Shunty was shot at by an unidentified assailant during the elections after which he became a Municipal Counsellor. ‘I don’t think there is any connection between the two incidents. Back in 2007, I believe, it was done with a motive of threatening. Things are different today but it is tough to say who is behind this,’ he added. In 2008, when Shunty became a member of the Shiromani Akali Dal, the party deployed two officials of Punjab Police for his protection. ‘They still protect Shunty but unfortunately none of them could be there for his rescue on Wednesday,’ said a source.
