BJP maintains stronghold over South and East MCDs

After winning the Mayor and Deputy Mayor posts in South MCD last week, ruling BJP on Monday retained both seats in East MCD also. The party candidates defeated their rivals from the opposition Congress by a margin of 17 votes. The Members of Parliament (MP) Mahesh Giri and Manoj Tiwari also cast their votes as members of the East Corporation. However, MLAs of Aam Aadmi Party abstained from voting.

Harshdeep Malhotra of BJP was elected for the coveted post of Mayor of East Delhi. He defeated the congress candidate Rekha Rani with a margin of 17 votes. Total 64 votes were polled, out of which, one vote was declared invalid and Malhotra secured 40 votes. Similarly, the same result was seen in the election for Deputy Mayor’s post and Asha Singh of BJP was declared elected by defeating the Congress candidate, Aas Mohammad. Manoj Tyagi and Lata Gupta of the BJP and Varyam Kaur of Congress got elected as the members of the Standing Committee from the House unanimously.

Speaking on the occasion, Harshdeep Malhotra said that East MCD will try to improve its financial situation. He also said that the corporation demands from Delhi Government to table the recommendations of the fourth Delhi Finance Commission report, which advocates the better global share for local bodies. He also said that education would be the key area, where efforts will be made for better computer education.
