BJP leaders divided on death penalty for rapists

Differences have emerged within the BJP over the suggestions to be submitted to the three member Justice JS Verma Committee which has been constituted to give recommendations on amending laws to provide speedy justice and greater punishment in sexual assault cases. Sources say there is difference of opinion on capital punishment for the accused in rape cases.
Leader of opposition, Lok Sabha, Sushma Swaraj had demanded capital punishment for rape while speaking in the House, saying: ‘If this girl (the paramedical student) survives, she will be a living dead, these people should be given capital punishment.’ However, some leaders in the party do not share her view.
A senior leader said the punishment for such crimes should be within the constitutional ambit and there should be a civilised way to deal with these crimes. The leader hinted he is not in favour of either chemical castration or capital punishment and would stick with life imprisonment.
Major recommendations by the party will be on the procedural changes in the law regarding the crime. The party feels laws should be strengthened in these incidents, currently the sentence given to the accused in eve teasing is three months.
