BJP gears up for K’taka assembly elections

BJP has started its preparation in view of the assembly elections in nine states this year.

The party however, is wary of the southern state Karnataka where former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa after breaking away from BJP  recently floated his political outfit Karnataka Janata Party (KJP).

BJP leaders say that their main worry is it intact the vote bank that they had captured during the 2008 elections. The BJP had got 34 percent of vote share and had managed to win 110 seats in the last assembly elections.

‘Yeddyurappa has a huge support among the Lingayats, so there will be a dent in our vote bank but we will try to contain our vote bank as much as possible’ said a senior BJP leader.

The state BJP unit has already convened a Chintan-Mantan Baitak of party functionaries on 5 Jan, where the party will be finalising its strategy for the assembly elections  scheduled in April-May.  Party leaders say that about 100-150 names could be finalised in this meeting.

While there are problems aplenty for the party in Karntaka, BJP plans to expand its reach in the north eastern states.  The party is likely to have a tie with P.A Sangama in Megalaya, where the party  had managed one seat in the last assembly elections.
