On Friday, the party announced names of 18 candidates including four from Rajasthan for the Lok Sabha election. They have decided to field Congress defector Colonel Sonaram Choudhary from Barmer instead of Singh’s wish. Sonaram had served in 1971 War in Eastern Front and retired from the Army as a full Colonel in 1987.
Jaswant wanted to contest his last election from Barmer and not from any other seat, but his wish was not kept by the CEC.
Ever since Sonaram joined the party, chief minister Vasundhara Raje has been lobbying for a ticket for the Jat leader on the argument that Barmer has a large Jat population. It was learnt that Raje wanted to keep Jaswant out of the state anticipating yet another power centre if he wins and hold an important portfolio.
Jaswant is reportedly miffed with party’s decision and likely to contest the election as an independent candidate from Barmer.
The other candidates from Rajasthan figured in the list are: Manoj Rajoriya from Karauli-Dholpur, Sanwarmal Jat from Ajmer and PP Choudhary from Pali.
The party released its seventh list including six from Tamil Nadu, three from Karnataka, two from West Bengal including sing-cum-music director Bappi Lahiri from Srerampur, and one each from Assam, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh. So far the BJP has announced a total of 389 candidates for the Lok Sabha elections.
