BJP, Cong likely to finalise list of Delhi poll candidates today

The Congress Central Election Committee (CEC) meeting on Tuesday is likely to finalise their list of candidates for all 70 seats in the upcoming assembly elections. The meeting will be chaired by Congress Party president, Sonia Gandhi.

During the last meeting of the CEC, on 28 October, tickets for approximately 43 candidates were approved. It is expected that the CEC will approve tickets for the other 27 candidates, whose names were recommended by the Delhi Congress screening committee. This list has been sent to the CEC for approval.

Earlier, the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) had stated that they were not going to announce the list of candidates before 7 November. However, the CEC meeting has been preponed because Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to go out of station on 7 November. The date for filing nomination is going to begin on 9 November, 2013.

CEC members include Congress president Sonia Gandhi, prime minister Manmohan Singh, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, Ahmed Patel, Janardhan Dwivedi, V Narayanasamy, Ambika Soni, Mohsina Kidwai, Mukul Wasnik, Girja Vyas, Jai Prakash Agarwal, chief minister Sheila Dikshit and Shakeel Ahmed.

CEC’s first meeting was held last week, where it was decided that tickets for 12 sitting MLAs were kept on hold, due to several factors going against them. However, later on Delhi Pradesh Congress president Jai Prakash Agarwal clarified that, ‘CEC meeting has almost cleared the names of all 40 sitting MLAs.’

On 31 October, the meeting of the Congress screening committee for Delhi was held and they prepared a list of prospective candidates for the remaining 27 seats.

A source at Delhi Congress office said, ‘senior party members have selected three forms for every seat, but it has been confirmed that only one of them will be selected in next CEC meeting.’
The party is mulling provision of tickets to those former MLAs, who were replaced by new candidates in the 2008 assembly polls.

‘The Delhi Congress Election Committee decided not to repeat this mistakes and former MLAs, who were replaced, which led to their defeat in those constituencies, will get a fair chance during ticket distribution. Former MLAs like Brahm Pal from Trilokpuri, Jile Singh Chauhan from Burari, Naveen Sharma from Babarpur will get a fair chance this assembly election, as the party lost all those constituencies when it replaced the sitting MLAs with new a face,’ said a source.
