BJP, Cong corporators clash over chairs

A fight on Monday broke out at the Yamunanagar Municipal Corporation office between the supporters of the mayor and her deputy over a matter of chairs falling short, leaving one councillor injured.

Mayor Saroj Bala (Independent) arrived at the office and found her deputy, BJP’s Pawan Bittu, seated there along with some other persons.

Soon, tempers ran high as the mayor, who was with her supporters, found she had no place to sit.

A heated exchange then followed between the two sides over the seating, corporation sources said.

Bala insisted that the senior deputy mayor vacate the chairs, but with Bittu refusing to relent, her supporters soon got into a fight with him.

Allegedly, the BJP members, outnumbered, were bashed up by Congress workers for nearly half an hour. The police had to be called in to intervene.

A few councillors of the 20-member House were present at the Corporation Office at the time and they, too, joined in the melee, leading to injuries for one councillor, BJP’s Sangeeta Singhal.

Singhal was initially taken to the civil hospital for treatment but now has been admitted to a private hospital.

The woman corporator from BJP, trying to shield a party worker and mediate, was pushed around and punched allegedly by five-six Congress workers.

‘A worker from our party was being beaten. I tried to save him since he’s like a son. In the process, I too got hurt,’ she said.  Around half a dozen corporators and BJP workers were injured in the clash.

The BJP alleges it was the Congress corporators and their supporters who attacked their workers. Bittu later submitted a complaint with police against six supporters of the mayor.

BJP workers are now camping outside the police station and want FIRs registered against all Congress workers and corporators involved in this bizarre incident.
