BJP calls strike today to dent Kejriwal’s 31 July auto rally

While a strike has been announced by BJP backed Bhartiya Mazdoor Sangh auto union against the high handedness of traffic personnel, former chief minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal is all set to address the auto drivers on 31 July.

Rajendra Soni, general secretary of Delhi Auto Rickshaw Sangh has, however denied any political motive behind the strike. ‘All the parties have used auto drivers to score political dividends. We have been cheated by politicians many times in the past’, he added.

The AAP-supported auto drivers have alleged that Soni is trying to establish himself as a leader of all auto drivers in Delhi. ‘Why is he calling the strike now? His union is supported by BJP and RSS, why are auto drivers still harassed by traffic police. He is doing all this just to prove that he is the tallest leader of auto unions in Delhi’, Sanjay Chawla, coordinator of AAP’s auto cell told Millennium Post.
A large number of auto rickshaws in Delhi will go off roads on Monday against ‘harassment’ by traffic police and transport department officials.

Meanwhile, Soni has stated that it is a peaceful and voluntary protest. ‘Any auto driver who is the victim of this corrupt system is most welcome to join us in the strike. We will not force anyone to sit on demonstration’, he said.

Auto drivers have continuously alleged traffic police of being corrupt. ‘If we don’t pay heed to their demands, they seize our vehicle and impose heavy penalty on us. The central government should immediately take steps to curb corruption in traffic police’, said Soni.

There are over 80,000 auto rickshaws plying in the national capital. The auto drivers had played a very instrumental role in electoral success of AAP by putting party posters on their vehicles during the assembly elections in Delhi last year.

Soon after becoming chief minister of Delhi, Kejriwal had addressed an ‘auto mahasabha’ to hear out their grievances.
