Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-sponsored west Uttar Pradesh bandh on Sunday evoked good response as most of the markets in the 15 districts remained closed.
Dawn to dusk bandh has been called to protest against the arrest of BJP MLAs in connection with the Muzaffarnagar riots and demand for arrest of UP minister Mohammad Azam Khan for his alleged role in the violence.
Almost all the markets in Ghaziabad, Meerut, Moradabad, Saharanpur, Bullandhshar, Baghpat, Shamli, Sambhal and other districts were closed and the vehicular traffic was thin.
Official sources said that police had to resort to mild force to disperse the protesting BJP workers near Ghantaghar in Saharanpur while they were trying to force the shopkeepers to shut down their establishments.
