The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the chief opposition party Congress, on Thursday, filed nominations for the posts of mayor and deputy mayor of the three MCDs for the upcoming Municipal elections. April 16 (Thursday) was the last for filing the nominations.
However, not a single nomination has been filed by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for the coveted posts. Although the BJP has exuded confidence over repeating former results in the Delhi mayoral polls scheduled to happen next week, the elections seem to be heading for a tough battle between the BJP and the Congress.
Subhash Arya, chairman, Standing Committee, South MCD, has filed nomination for the mayor’s post. He is contesting against SDMC leader of opposition Farhad Suri from Congress. BJP’s Kuldeep Solanki will be contesting against Congress’s Indu for the post of deputy mayor. The fate of the two parties will be sealed on April 24. While the BJP enjoys a considerable majority in EDMC and North MCD, the South appears to be a tricky spot.
In the 2013 Mayoral elections, the BJP won the mayor’s seat by just one vote and they lost the deputy mayor seat to the Congress. Ravinder Gupta of the BJP will be contesting against Harsh Sharma of the Congress for the coveted post in North MCD. Neelam Goel of the BJP and Guddi Devi of the Congress have filed their nominations for the post of deputy mayor. At present, there are a total 104 seats; there are 62 councillors of BJP, 28 from Congress, six from BSP and five others.
In EDMC, the face-off will be between BJP’s Harshdeep Malhotra and Rekha Rani of Congress for the mayor’s post. Asha Singh of BJP and Congress’s Aas Mohammad have filed their nominations for the post of deputy mayor of East Delhi.
