Bill Gates to pump dollars into Modi’s Swachh Bharat project

With Microsoft founder and world’s richest billionaire Bill Gates visiting India on 19 September, prime minister Narendra Modi’s dream project Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is set to get a big boost. Gates, a renowned philanthropist, is visiting here just nine days prior to Modi’s US visit, which will begin from 27 September. Gates, the co-chair of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, is focussing on eradication of health problems across the globe.

According to official sources of the rural development ministry, Gates is coming to meet rural development minister Nitin Gadkari. It’s expected that Gates will inject funds to push Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, the pet project of PM Modi. Official sources also mentioned that Gates may also call on the prime minister and offer financial assistance to help in completion of sanitation drive in
the country.

The Microsoft founder isn’t coming to India and meeting the government representatives for the first
time. Gates had earlier visited on 31 May 2012 and met the then rural development minister Jairam Ramesh. The former counterpart of Gadkari had hit the headlines for his famous and controversial ‘toilets are more important in India than temples’ remark.

FM Jaitley in his Union Budget speech had said the government intended to cover every household by 2019 through the ‘Swachch Bharat Abhiyan.’
