Two held, 1 detained over murder of Satyajit Biswas

Kolkata: Two persons have been arrested and another detained in connection with the murder of sitting Trinamool Congress MLA Satyajit Biswas.

Biswas was killed by unidentified miscreants when he had gone to attend a function in connection with Saraswati Puja at Krishnagunj on Saturday evening, where the assailants shot him from a point blank range.

An FIR has been lodged against four persons including BJP leader Mukul Roy. Those arrested have been identified as Kartik Mondol and Sujit Mondol. The gun that had been used to kill the MLA has been recovered and sent for examination.

Anindya Basu, officer in-charge of Hanskhali police station, has been removed and the bodyguard of the slain MLA has been suspended. Judicial inquiry has been started against Basu. A high-level investigation team led by Ajay Kumar, Inspector General (IG), CID, reached the spot on Saturday night. They collected samples and talked to the people. They have also collected the footage recorded by locals on their phones.

Trinamool Congress Secretary General Partha Chatterjee and Anubrata Mondol, who has been recently appointed to look after Nadia, visited the house of Biswas. Abhishek Banerjee will go to Krishnagar on Monday.

Meanwhile, the Matua community has decided to hold a protest meeting at Thakurnagar, Krishnagar, Majdia and Krishnagunj. Jyotipriya Mallick and Mamatabala Thakur will attend the protest meeting.

Partha Chatterjee said that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is shocked by the news and said that she would speak to the administration to arrest the murderers and conspirators immediately. "How could they kill an innocent man like Satyajit?" she told Chatterjee.

Alleging involvement of BJP in the murder of Biswas, Chatterjee said: "In Nabadweep, the party's organisation has been affected as the MLA Pundarikakshya Saha cannot take strain because of physical ailment. Biswas was looking after the organisation of Nabadweep. BJP thought that by eliminating Biswas they will be able to make a dent in Nabadweep. It is a clear case of murder for political gains."

BJP is trying to disturb the area by creating division among the Hindus, Adivashis and Matuas, he added. Anubrata Mondol said: "Those involved in the murder will not be spared."

Local people alleged that power had gone out seven times within half an hour. Mystery also shrouds absence of the bodyguard, who had been granted leave 'verbally'.

Drawing a parallel between the two murders, local people further alleged that there had been frequent power cuts two years ago, when Dulal Biswas was murdered in Krishnagunj. A pall of gloom descended when the body of Biswas reached his house on Sunday morning. Chatterjee and Mondol placed floral wreaths on his mortal remains.
