Radio City's employee held for Parliament Street hit & run death

New Delhi: Delhi Police on Saturday arrested Radio City's Sales Manager Ankit Gulati in a hit and run case at New Delhi's Parliament Street in which a 35-year-old man, Dheeraj Kumar, was killed early on the morning of June 30. According to the police, the Radio City's employee was speeding black Hyundai Creta rammed into Kumar's scooty, leaving him badly injured. Kumar was rushed to Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital where he was declared "brought dead".

During interrogation, Gulati confessed to his crime. The police said that he was watching videos on his mobile when he lost control of his car and hit the victim from behind. However, the circumstances indicate that he was driving in an inebriated state.

He had already attended two back-to-back parties at a club at Nehru Place and Chanakyapuri with friends and was going to attend a third one at a hotel in New Delhi when he lost control of his car and rammed Kumar's scooty from behind.

The case was especially challenging as it was a completely blind case and there were little clues except for some broken parts of the suspect vehicle found on the spot. In addition, the matter was very sensitive as an allegation of murder was also raised by the family of the deceased.

Electronic surveillance was also mounted to find any clues regarding the vehicle and the driver. A thorough investigation by all the teams revealed that the offending vehicle was a black Hyundai Creta.

An expert team from Hyundai analysed the parts and after analysis of CCTV footage from over 100 CCTV cameras from New Delhi and painstaking verification of over 2,000 black Hyundai Cretas. Soon, the offending car was traced to East Patel Nagar.

The accused Ankit Gulati was arrested and confessed that he had sent the Hyundai Creta to a repairman to avoid detection and get the car repaired to as good as new condition.

"Ankit confessed that he was watching videos on phone while driving and could not see the victim on his Activa at the time of the accident (around 5:38 am). After the accident, he ran away from the spot leaving the injured," said Madhur Verma, DCP (New Delhi).
