New Delhi: Ending all speculations over a possible tiff between TMC and Congress, Congress chief Rahul Gandhi finally called Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday seeking her party's support for an Opposition initiative of moving an impeachment motion against Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra.
Apart from Congress another key leader of the anti-BJP brigade Sharad Pawar also strongly backed the move. A lot of opposition parties, sans the TMC, signed the draft to move an impeachment motion against the CJI. According to Congress sources, "During the conversation, Gandhi sought TMC's support, but the West Bengal Chief Minister told him that she had been in touch with a few lawyers, and cautioned that the move could backfire politically."
Banerjee even communicated with other opposition leaders like DMK chief M. K. Stalin who also concurred with the TMC supremo's view. According to sources, "Banerjee feels that if the impeachment move against CJI by the federal front fell through, then it could have negative political repercussions ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections." It is learnt from highly placed sources, that the Congress chief could review his party's position after talking to the Bengal CM.
Meanwhile, experts feel that the conversation between two key opposition leaders assumes significance, especially in light of recent reports of growing frostiness between the two national parties. Last month, the TMC supremo visited the national capital and met Congress chairperson Sonia Gandhi at her residence. But the Congress president Rahul Gandhi was busy at the time with his party's election campaign for the impending Karnataka Assembly elections, which is scheduled for May 12.
