Police baton-charge JNU students

New Delhi: Monday saw a fierce face-off between students of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and the police after at least 100 of them were detained, some also injured, when they were allegedly baton-charged as they marched towards Parliament on the first day of the Winter Session, demanding a total rollback of the hostel fee hike.

On Sunday night, posters of a long march went viral which was to start from the JNU campus and continue towards Parliament, making it a 15-kilometre walk. However, Sunday night saw heavy barricading outside the campus with Section 144 being imposed.

The leaders of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union went for a meeting with the joint secretary of the Human Resource Development ministry after the day-long protest.

Delhi Metro had closed entry and exit gates at the Udyog Bhawan, Patel Chowk, Lok Kalyan and Central Secretariat stations after hundreds of JNU students clashed with cops.

Students took to Twitter to share pictures of the march and of injuries they received allegedly in a lathicharge by police, as the hashtag "emergencyinJNU" trended on the microblogging site. See P4
