No Indian citizen will be left out, says HM; TMC 'unmoved'

New Delhi: Accusing vested interests of trying to create an atmosphere of fear and communal disharmony on social media over the Assam National Register of Citizen, the union government on Friday said there would be no discrimination in finalising it.

Replying to a short duration notice on the Assam NRC draft issue in Rajya Sabha, Home Minister Rajnath Singh assured that the names of no Indian citizen would be left out from the NRC as the process was fair and objective.

Stressing that the draft NRC was not the "final one", the Minister said all those who have been left out, will get an opportunity to provide the required documentary proof.

"There will not be any coercive action (against those not in the list)," the Minister asserted.

Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress moved a privilege motion in Lok Sabha on Friday over the detention of six MPs at Silchar Airport on Thursday afternoon.

TMC's Lok Sabha MP Kalyan Banerjee raked up the issue during House proceedings and said, "On Thursday, a team consisting of six MPs, and two MLAs had gone to Silchar. When they reached Silchar Airport, Assam Police did not allow them to go out of the airport. They said they were detained under Section 151 of CrPC. "The Parliamentary Affairs Minister told me that they had been detained at the behest of an officer appointed by the Supreme Court. Now, the factual position is that a competent authority did not pass the order."

Banerjee, who is also senior lawyer further pointed out that only the District Magistrate can pass an order under Section 151. "A citizen of India has a right to move to any part of India. MPs also have a responsibility to visit any part of India whenever there is a disturbance. It is clear from their statement that it was a malafide action," the TMC MP further added.

Even in Rajya Sabha, senior Parliamentarian, Derek O'Brien called the NRC a 'national crisis'. "This is a human rights issue, a humanitarian issue," he said.

He also took a dig at the BJP saying its national president was speaking a different language on the issue than the Home Minister.

The TMC also filed two police complaints against Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Friday over 'manhandling' of its leaders on Thursday.
