Monsoon hits Kerala, announces Skymet

NEW DELHI: Kerala got good rains on Monday, prompting the private weather forecast agency Skymet Weather to declare the onset of monsoon in the state which marks the arrival of the rainy season in India. The country's national weather forecaster - India Meteorological Department (IMD) - however, remained cautious, saying the monsoon will hit the state in the next 24 hours (on Tuesday) as predicted by it ten days ago.
"The wait for the arrival of much awaited southwest monsoon 2018 has finally come to an end on Monday. As per the weathermen, all the criteria required for the declaring the onset of monsoon over the Indian mainland have been met," said the Skymet Weather which had predicted May 28 (Monday) as the onset date.
Emphasising that the monsoon already reached Kerala on Monday, the Skymet Weather claimed that "all the criteria required for declaring the onset of monsoon over the Indian mainland has been met."
The IMD, however, stuck to its prediction of May 29 as a date of onset. Mritunjay Mohapatra, additional director general of the IMD, said that the weather agency would formally announce its arrival on Tuesday after observing "consistency of all its parameters on the second day".
He said, "Kerala got good rains on Monday, and all the conditions are favourable. We'll go by our definition and criteria to formally announce the onset of monsoon."
