NEW DELHI: Suhaib Illyasi of TV crime show India's Most Wanted fame was sentenced to life imprisonment by a Delhi court on Wednesday. He has been held guilty of murdering his wife Anju Illyasi in the year 2000.
Additional Sessions Judge S K Malhotra also slapped a fine of Rs 2 lakh on the convict and directed him to pay Rs 10 lakh to Anju Ilyasi's family.
Ilyasi, however, continued to claim innocence, denied the charges and termed the pronouncement of life sentence as "injustice". Ilyasi's defence counsel sought leniency for him, saying that he had never violated bail conditions and faced the trial for 17 years.
The counsel also said that he is successfully running magazines covering bureaucrats and has no criminal antecedents. Ilyasi, also the editor-in-chief of Bureaucracy Today magazine, faced the trial for 17 years for the death of his wife.
Anju Ilyasi's mother Rukma Singh welcomed the judgement and expressed satisfaction over the court's order.
