New Delhi: India has set an ambitious target to achieve 100 per cent detection of all types of severe weather at the village and household levels by 2047, with the goal of eliminating deaths from such events. This vision was outlined in the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Vision-2047 document, which was unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday. The document was released on the eve of the IMD’s 150th anniversary, marking a significant milestone for the country’s weather forecasting capabilities.

The Vision-2047 plan aims to ensure more accurate and timely weather forecasts, with a focus on improving detection at the grassroots level. According to the document, IMD aims for 100 per cent forecast accuracy for up to three days, 90 per cent for five days, 80 per cent for sevendays, and 70 per cent for up to 10 days. These forecasts will cover all severe weather events at block and panchayat levels, supported by advanced observational technologies like satellites, radars, and remote sensing systems.

A key objective is to minimise the loss of life and property damage from severe weather events. By enhancing early warning systems and providing dynamic impact-based forecasts and risk-based warnings, disaster managers, stakeholders, and the public will be empowered to take timely action. The goal is to ensure that communities are better prepared and can respond effectively to mitigate the impact of natural disasters.

In his address, Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed his vision of making India a developed nation by 2047, with an emphasis on climate resilience. IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra stated that the document will integrate weather and climate information into national policies, positioning India as a “weather-ready” and “climate-smart” nation.

As part of the 150th anniversary celebrations, Modi also launched “Mission Mausam,” aimed at enhancing weather understanding and forecasting using advanced technologies like artificial intelligence and machine learning. A commemorative Rs 150 coin and postal stamp were also released to mark the occasion.
