Los Angeles: The death toll from wildfires in Los Angeles has climbed to 16 as firefighters race against time before predicted strong winds threaten to push the blazes toward iconic landmarks, including the Getty Museum and UCLA.

The Los Angeles County coroner’s office reported Saturday that the Palisades Fire claimed five lives, while the Eaton Fire resulted in 11 fatalities. The fires have consumed approximately 62 square miles, forcing 150,000 residents to evacuate.

More than 14,000 personnel, including crews from nine states and Mexico, are battling the blazes. The Palisades Fire is 11 per cent contained, while the Eaton Fire stands at 15 per cent containment.

The wildfires have destroyed over 12,000 structures since Tuesday, with AccuWeather estimating damages between $135-150 billion, potentially making it the nation’s costliest fire disaster. Officials warn returning residents about toxic ash containing lead, arsenic, and asbestos.

The crisis has sparked controversy, with Fire Chief Kristin Crowley criticising city leadership over insufficient funding and water supply issues. Governor Gavin Newsom has ordered an investigation into a non-functioning reservoir and dry hydrants.
