Cyclone Kyarr : Kyarr likely to intensify into extremely severe cyclonic storm
Cyclonic Storm 'Kyarr' is likely to intensify into an extremely severe cyclonic storm, according to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). Earlier, the storm had intensified into a very severe cyclonic storm and lay centred over the east-central Arabian Sea, about 270 km to the west-southwest of Ratnagiri (Maharashtra), 360 km south-southwest of Mumbai and 1,780 km east-southeast of Salalah (Oman) at 5:30 am. The storm is likely to move towards Oman coast during the next 5 days, IMD said.
"Under the influence of the above systems, fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy with extremely heavy falls likely over Konkan & Goa and Coastal Karnataka during the next 24 hours," the latest bulletin issued by IMD said. It also forecasts heavy rainfall in Odisha, Assam and Meghalaya in the next 24 hours.
Earlier, the Met department had issued a red alert along the coast of Goa, Maharashtra and Karnataka for the next two days. "The storm is very likely to move east-northeast-wards till the evening of October 25 (today). Then it is very likely to recurve and move nearly westwards towards south Oman and adjoining Yemen coast with gradual intensification during subsequent 72 hours," the department had said earlier.
