Centre to expand network of stroke units across country

New Delhi: The Union Health Ministry announced plans to expand the network of stroke care units beyond the current 500 operational facilities. Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava outlined this initiative at the FICCI-organised National Stroke Summit 2025.

Non-communicable diseases now account for 66 per cent of deaths in India, with stroke emerging as a significant concern. The Indian Council of Medical Research has established specialised stroke care pathways, including mobile units and dedicated facilities.

The government’s hub-and-spoke model aims to optimise resource allocation and ensure nationwide access to specialised treatments. The Ayushman Bharat scheme provides financial coverage for stroke care while addressing risk factors through Ayushman Arogya Mandir centres. These health centres focus on early identification and management of key risk factors, including hypertension, diabetes, and lifestyle-related issues. They operate under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-communicable Diseases.

Recent research published in the International Journal of Stroke revealed that ischaemic stroke, caused by blood clots affecting brain supply, represents 70-80 per cent of stroke cases in India. The study identified 566 stroke centres across 26 states and union territories equipped with intravenous thrombolysis treatment capabilities.

Of these facilities, 361 centres offer advanced endovascular therapy for stroke patients. The Health Secretary emphasised that stroke prevention remains crucial as India tackles both communicable and non-communicable diseases.

The expansion of stroke care facilities is scheduled for implementation in the next financial year, focusing on improving accessibility and patient outcomes nationwide. This initiative aligns with broader efforts to enhance specialised healthcare access across India’s diverse geographical regions.
