Islamabad/Kabul: A powerful 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck northern Afghanistan today, with the tremors felt as far away as India and Pakistan, where one girl was killed and 11 people were injured.
The quake hit at 12:37 IST near Afghanistan's northern border with Tajikistan in the Hindu Kush mountains at a depth of 191 kilometres, the US Geological Survey said.
Frightened residents ran out of homes and shops in Kabul. No casualties were immediately reported in Afghanistan, the spokesman for the country's National Disaster Management Authority said.
Across the border in Pakistan, homes, offices and schools were quickly evacuated in Islamabad, Peshawar and Lahore.
The quake, which was felt in the Delhi-NCR region as well as the Kashmir Valley, led to panic in some parts with people rushing outdoors for safety.
There were no reports of any damage due to the earthquake, officials said.
"The epicentre of the quake was near the Afghanistan- Tajikistan border and occurred at a depth of around 190 kilometres," an official said in Srinagar.
In Delhi, Metro trains were halted briefly but services were not disrupted, said a Delhi Metro official.
The tremors were felt strongly in the Valley, with people rushing out of buildings and vehicles.
Officials snapped electricity supply briefly as a precautionary measure.
In Pakistan's Quetta town, one girl was killed after the roof of her house collapsed during the earthquake.
The epicentre was near Afghanistan's Jarm, which was hit by a devastating 7.5 magnitude quake in October 2015 that triggered landslides and flattened buildings, killing more than 380 people across the region.
