Big dams can trigger calamity in critical times, a noted enviormentalist observed on Tuesday.

“Uttarakhand is home to 16,000 irrigation canals. These water sources can be utilised for mini-power projects. Big dams are not suitable for the state as it lies in the Zone IV category which is a damage risk zone,” said Suresh Bhai, an environmentalist.

“The state is vulnerable to natural calamities such as quake, flood, landslides and snow avalanche. The big dams can play the role of catalyst in times of crises,” he said.
