According to investigative agencies, such celebrations may indicate that Operation Batla House was not a fake encounter.
‘Celebrations by the terror outfit indicate that the encounter wasn’t a fake one, as claimed by politicians, media and civil society members,’ a source in National Investigation Agency (NIA) told Millennium Post. In 2013, Bhatkal had recorded his statement under section 164 CrPc and told NIA about such celebrations on the day of the encounter.
A source in Delhi police special cell said, ‘There could be two reasons behind celebrating events that took place on 19 September, 2008. One is that they were celebrating Delhi serial blasts and the other is Batla House encounter.’ He further added that if they wanted to celebrate serial blasts they could have partied before the encounter.
Speaking to Millennium Post, a source close to investigation said, ‘On the day of the encounter Yasin Bhatkal was in Mangalore when he received information about the Batla House encounter in south east Delhi. Bhatkal was watching a news channel when the news flashed.’
Inspector Mohan Chand Sharma, who was heading Delhi police special team in Operation Batla House, was killed in the encounter. Sharma won seven gallantry medals including President of India’s medal in 2008. Two terrorists Atif Amin and Mohamed Sajid were killed, while two suspects managed to escape the encounter.
‘After receiving information about the incident, Bhatkal went to the farmhouse at Koppa where Bhatkal brothers-- Iqbal and Riyaz, celebrated the contribution of the two martyrs (IM operatives) and the death of the inspector,’ Bhatkal told investigators.
While celebrating the encounter they patted each other for establishing their identity in the world of terrorism. ‘Earlier after rocking different places with terror strikes, they needed publicity to take credit for the blasts using the internet or phone. After Delhi serial blasts in 2008 followed by Batla House encounter, they have earned name and fame. Thus the trio celebrated all night with drinks and chicken,’ the source added.
Bhatkal also confronted that he was not responsible for Delhi serial blasts in 2008, which killed 30 people and left around 100 persons injured. ‘I only supplied ten IEDs for the blasts to Riyaz Bhatkal but I don’t know whether the same were utilised or not. Riyaz and Azam Garg group involving Atif Asjeed, Saif and Bhata Sajid were responsible for the blasts,’ Bhatkal told investigators.
