In an interview with Anup Verma, Bharti exuded confidence to win the polls slated to take place on February 7. The leader also talked about inclusive growth of the Capital.
What are the major issues on which you are banking support of the people?
Somnath Bharti (SB): Although Malviya Nagar assembly constituency has been considered as key segment, there are lot more issues which require immediate attention. Acute shortage of water and sewer related problems are the main issues, which are to be addressed. Faulty drainage, bad condition of roads, parks, public utility centres and sanitation related problems have worsened lives of people living here and we have prioritised these issues in our agenda.
Have you prepared any roadmap to ensure development of the area?
SB: As I said, the constituency is reeling under plenty of problems. It needs all extra efforts to make it a ‘Model Constituency’. We have prepared a full proof plan to solve water woes as well as the crisis of drainage system and once Aam Aadmi Party forms government, it will provide permanent solution of these problems within 18 to 24 months period. The constituency has at least 372 colonies/blocks, we have decided to appoint representative from each colony/block.
The representatives, who will be appointed from the same locality, will take stock of the situation everyday from their respective areas and will pass the same to the MLA concerned. Once problems are brought to notice, we will meet with the residents and will solve as per our capacity. Apart from this, we are coming up with a portal naming www.AAPConnect.com to make the system transparent and to fix the accountability of elected AAP representatives.
Being an MLA of the area, what were your achievements?
SB: Though I was MLA for just 10 months yet I did a lot of work during my tenure. I have spent 100 per cent amount (Rs.4 crore) of my MLA fund to complete 60 projects like on installation of CCTVs, to resolve water and sewer woes. I also completed 8 out of 19 projects despite persistent obstructions from BJP-ruled MCD in a short span of time. I also conducted 127 Mohalla Sabhas to reach mass and put my best effort to solve their problems.
Malviya Nagar is a congested area and parking has always been a problem here. Have you chalked out any plan to meet the crisis?
SB: When I was elected representative, I witnessed the same problem. It was tough to provide free spaces for parking, as there is a space crunch. But now we have identified eight places where underground parking will be constructed to stave off this issue only if our AAP comes to power.
The area is known for hub of drug trafficking and you drew controversies while fighting against the drug Mafiosi and even your government came in full support for your act. What is the impact of the incident among voters?
SB: I successfully eradicated the drug trafficking issue in Malviya Nagar’s Khirki Extension during my
tenure as an MLA. Though it was tough yet I won the battle. The residents, especially women, thanked me for uprooting drug mafias from Khriki Extension. The drug traffickers have made their footprints strong in connivance with the local authorities. My focus will be to eliminate all the drug traffickers in the areas like Arjun Nagar, Humayunpur and other places of my constituency if I am voted to power.
