Window pane collapse: South Kolkata school installs safety nets

Kolkata: Nava Nalanda School has installed safety nets at the site where a glass window fell and injured two students on Monday morning. During morning prayers, a portion of a sliding glass window on the fifth floor broke and fell to the ground floor.
Principal Arijit Mitra assured that the school had taken immediate steps to prevent further accidents. “We have temporarily installed safety nets and restricted access to that side of the building as a precautionary measure,” he said. Mitra also confirmed that the broken window had been repaired, and other windows are being inspected for safety. “While no one can guarantee that accidents won’t happen again, we are taking all necessary precautions,” he added.
The incident resulted in minor injuries to Srinjoy Roy, a Class IX student and more serious injuries to Priyam Das, who required 23 stitches for head and neck wounds. Das was treated at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and was discharged the following day after being observed for 24 hours. A CT scan showed no serious concerns.
The accident has sparked protests from parents, who have accused the school of negligence in maintaining its facilities. As agreed on Monday, principal Mitra and the representatives of parents will soon meet to discuss issues related to safety, sanitation and student welfare.
“We are proposing a meeting on Saturday or January 23 to address these concerns and ensure such incidents do not occur in the future,” said Indrajit Chanda, a parent of a Class VIII student. Principal Mitra confirmed the meeting would take place soon, stating, “We will meet with them once they inform us about the date.” He added that school attendance remained steady at 90 per cent to 95 per cent on Tuesday despite the incident.”
