Kolkata: Emboldened by its Lok Sabha and recently concluded Assembly by-election results, the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) is in favour of holding the civic body polls pending for quite sometime in the early next year.

According to sources, elections are pending in about 15 civic bodies in the state. Following its impressive win in several assembly by-elections and Lok Sabha polls, the ruling party is keen to hold the elections in the civic bodies.

There are at least 15 civic bodies that are currently being run by administrators as elections are due. Sources said that the State Election Commission will start preparations for conducting the elections in these civic bodies after it gets a “go ahead” from the state government.

A large section within the Trinamool Congress is eager to see the civic body elections as early as possible. They believe that the party will again get a spectacular victory in the civic body elections as well.

If elections occur early and the newly-elected municipal boards get one year before going to 2026 Assembly elections, these boards will then get some time in hand to convince people with their performance. Meanwhile, the state government has already initiated the process for holding elections in three Hill municipalities namely Kurseong, Kalimpong and Mirik where polls have been pending for nearly 18 months.

Administrators have been appointed for the functioning of the three municipalities.
