BALURGHAT: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has bagged all 8 Panchayat Samities (PS) along with 60 out of 64 Gram Panchayats (GP), thereby forming boards in these PS and GPs in South Dinajpur.

South Dinajpur has eight PSs and 64 GPs, covering both Balurghat and Gangarampur sub-divisions.

While Balurghat, Kumarganj, Hili and Tapan PSs are under Balurghat sub-division, Gangarampur, Banshihari, Kushmandi and Harirampur belong to the Gangarampur sub-division.

Initially, out of 64 GPs, the Trinamool Congress had captured 54 GPs, BJP had bagged four GPs and the rest of the six GPs were hung as no single political party achieved the majority.

District president of TMC, Mrinal Sarkar, said: “People believe in the TMC party and the party Chairperson Mamata Banerjee. In South Dinajpur, the voters blessed us by giving their support and trust in the rural poll. We achieved a landslide victory here in the rural poll. We captured 54 GPs and eight PSs. We formed the boards of 54 GPs along with the six hung GPs too by taking support from the opposition. BJP formed only four GPs. We constituted boards in all the eight PSs as well.”

Balurghat PS Sabhapati Arup Sarkar said: “Emphasis will be placed on drinking water and lighting systems in rural areas. Balurghat PS will work for people.”

Senior TMC leader Arpita Ghosh said that the result of the rural poll in South Dinajpur will work as a morale boost for their party workers before the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls to be held next year. Swarup Chowdhury, BJP district president, said: “Four GPs were formed by our party. The newly-elected Pradhans were directed to work for the people without wasting time.”
