Kolkata: The four individuals arrested in connection with the Kasba law college rape case were produced before the Alipore Court on Tuesday and have been further remanded to police custody.

Among them, the three main accused—Monojit Mishra alias Mango, Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukherjee—have been remanded to police custody till July 8, while the security guard, Pinaki Banerjee, has been remanded till July 4.

On Tuesday, the Public Prosecutor (PP) submitted before the court that the substantial evidence and CCTV footage corroborate the statement of the victim.

He also stated that the inhaler given to the victim was not meant to relieve her condition, but rather to keep her conscious so the accused could continue abusing her.

The lawyers representing the accused persons did not appeal for their bail. The lawyer appearing for the accused persons stated that his clients are cooperating with the investigation and will continue to cooperate. Meanwhile, the security guard stated before the court that he is a salaried person and has no connection with the crime.

During the submission, the PP appealed for further police remand for the accused persons, citing that the investigation is still going on and their presence in police custody is necessary. After the hearing, the court granted police remand for the accused persons.

Meanwhile, Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma, while attending a police programme on Tuesday, stated that the police took prompt action following the registration of the FIR.

He also mentioned that the police have taken necessary action already and will do the needful for the sake of the case.

He said: “Police are investigating. FIR was registered promptly. In less than 12 hours, three people were arrested. Later, another was arrested based on the evidence. We have collected several pieces of evidence which are being analysed. We have come across huge data, which is also being analysed. All necessary actions have already been taken. Police will do everything for the sake of the investigation.”

On the other hand, on Tuesday, after the Governing Body (GB) meeting at the college, Monojit was terminated, and the other two students were rusticated. Moreover, the contact with the security agency has been terminated as well.

Earlier, the magistrate had to adjourn the hearing for some time as hundreds of lawyers not associated with the case entered the courtroom.

Two groups of lawyers were engaged in a heated exchange of words — one demanding strict punishment of the accused and the other asking for a fair investigation and opposing the entry of outsiders.
