Tension in Chopra over tearing of Congress flags
Raiganj: Tension gripped Kaliganj in the Chopra Assembly Constituency of North Dinajpur district following allegations of tearing of Congress flags and festoons by miscreants on Thursday night. The incident has sparked a war of words between the Congress and the Trinamool Congress (TMC), with both sides blaming each other.
Jakir Abedin, the Congress candidate from Chopra, alleged that miscreants backed by the TMC vandalised campaign material, including flags and festoons, during the night. Abedin said, “Our flags and festoons in front of the party office at Kaliganj were torn. Earlier, TMC leaders used abusive language against me on social media. We have lodged complaints against them with the police and district election officials.”
Refuting the allegations, Abdul Halim, a local TMC leader, claimed that the Congress was trying to gain publicity. “Congress has no organisational strength in Kaliganj. Their candidate is facing difficulties in campaigning. They are making false allegations to remain in the media for elections,” added Halim.
A senior police officer of Chopra police station confirmed that a complaint has been received and an investigation is underway. The incident has added to the growing political heat in the district ahead of the upcoming elections.
