‘Temp likely to drop in South Bengal districts after Jan 15’

Kolkata: A winter chill that is usually familiar with the holy dip in Gangasagar Mela has been missing in South Bengal districts due to the impact of a western disturbance. Lakhs of people will take a holy dip on Tuesday on the occasion of ‘Makar Sankranti’ amid a soaring temperature. Temperature is again expected to drop in South Bengal districts after January 15.
The Regional Meteorological Centre in Alipore said that there will be no major drop in the temperature in the next 24 hours. Dense fog is likely to prevail in several Bengal districts on Tuesday as well. Kolkata on Monday registered the lowest temperature of the day at 19.2 degree Celsius. The lowest temperature of the day stood at 12.6 degree Celsius on last Saturday following which the mercury started rising because of the impact of a western disturbance. Several South Bengal districts witnessed dense fog early Monday morning as well. The temperature will mostly remain unchanged in South Bengal districts in the next 24 hours. As a result of the western disturbance, there has been an incursion of moisture from the sea into the mainland. There is no possibility of rainfall, the MeT office said.
There will be dense fog in the districts like East Burdwan, West Burdwan, Birbhum, Murshidabad, Nadia, North 24-Parganas, South 24-Parganas. Weather is very likely to be dry in various South Bengal districts. Dense fog is likely to prevail over the region during late night to morning hours and visibility may be reduced.
Mercury may drop further in North Bengal from Wednesday. There is a possibility of snowfall in some parts of Darjeeling in the next 48 hours. The visibility may drop to 50 metre in several parts of North Bengal.
