Kolkata: With the steady flow of cold northerly wind, the minimum temperature in Kolkata on Thursday dropped to 13.8 degree Celsius. Mercury dropped by almost 5 degree in the past 48 hours.

The Regional Meteorological Centre in Alipore predicted that the lowest temperature may further go down in several South Bengal districts. Mercury may also go down below 10 degrees in several North Bengal districts, the MeT office said. Several north and south Bengal districts will witness thick fog early in the morning hours in the next couple of days. All the western districts may witness light fog in the morning. Vehicular movement may be affected in several districts early in the morning hours due to fog.

Kolkata’s highest temperature of the day was registered at 23.2 degree Celsius on Wednesday. The lowest temperature in most of the western districts remained at around 10-12 degree Celsius.

The MeT office also said that cold northerly wind will continue to flow as a result mercury may slide down further. Night temperature may further drop by 3-4 degrees in several South Bengal districts, the weather office said. The sky will remain clear and there is no prediction of rainfall in the next few days. Some parts in South Bengal received a little drizzle last Monday.

According to the IMD, the winter will be harsh this year due to the impact of La Niña. The weather office said that western disturbances have withdrawn from north west parts of the country and they have no impact on the eastern states as well. As a result there will be a free flow of cold north winds. There is a possibility of snowfall in Darjeeling.

The districts like Murshidabad, West Burdwan, Birbhum, Bankura, Purulia, West Midnapore will witness thick fog in the early morning hours. Fog alert has been issued for the districts like Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar and North Dinajpur in north Bengal. In some places the visibility may drop to 50 metres.

“The northerly wind has already arrived and hence the minimum temperature in Kolkata and other South Bengal districts will dip further. Along with Kolkata, various South Bengal districts will also see the mercury dipping by two to three degrees in the next 24 hours,” a weather official said.
