Alipurduar: Tshering Dukpa, a teenager from the remote Buxa Hills in Alipurduar district and a member of the Dukpa tribe, has earned a spot on the East Bengal Club’s Under-17 football team. Hailing from the small village of Chunabhati, Tshering’s journey to this milestone has been one of determination and resilience.

Tshering, who plays as a striker, began his football journey without formal training. His village lacked basic facilities, and the only football field in the area was near the historic Buxa Fort, approximately six kilometres away. Undeterred by the daily uphill trek, Tshering practised tirelessly with friends from neighbouring villages.

Coming from a humble background, Tshering faced significant challenges. His father, Tchsodu Dukpa, a cattle herder, initially discouraged him from pursuing football, urging him to focus on academics. However, Tshering balanced his studies with a part-time job as a tourist guide, saving enough to buy his first pair of boots and a jersey.

His dedication began to pay off when he joined the United Football Academy in Jaigaon, where he trained for two years free of cost under the guidance of coach Govinda Biswa. Later, his talent shone during the 2024 Football Talent Search Project organized by Jubilee Club in Birpara. While representing the state in Kolkata, Tshering’s performance caught the attention of East Bengal Club officials, paving the way for his selection.

“From the very first day, I saw his potential to become a future footballer,” said Govinda Biswa, coach of United Football Academy. “Tshering’s commitment to hard training was extraordinary. I have no doubt he will leave a mark if given the opportunity.”

Reflecting on his journey, Tshering shared, “Now, my goal is to work harder and secure a spot in the club’s first XI. Bhaichung Bhutia has been my inspiration, and it was watching him play that fuelled my passion for football.”

Residents of Chunabhati are thrilled by Tshering’s success. “He is the pride of our village,” said local resident Pado Dukpa. “We are confident that he will excel and someday wear the national jersey, bringing glory to our community and the entire country.”
