Siliguri: The Siliguri Mahakuma Parishad (SMP) has initiated a project to renovate its community hall as part of its efforts to increase revenue.

The SMP board has allocated Rs 1.5 crore for the project, which includes expanding the hall, installing a new lift, and upgrading facilities. The office of SMP is located at Hakimpara in Siliguri, and the community hall is on the fifth floor of the SMP office building. “The hall has not been renovated for years. We are now expanding the hall, increasing its seating capacity from 100 to 300 people, and installing a modern sound system. The lift is also being added to ensure easy access to the top floor,” said Arun Ghosh, Sabhadhipati of SMP.

The renovation aims to make the facility suitable for hosting various functions and events. Once completed, the hall will be available for rent at rates lower than those of private community halls, making it an affordable option for residents. “We are hopeful this will generate significant income for SMP,” Ghosh added.

In addition to the hall renovation, SMP is installing solar panels on the terrace of its office building to reduce electricity expenses. This initiative is expected to save approximately Rs. 50,000 per month on electricity bills, contributing to the Parishad’s goal of financial sustainability. The project reflects SMP’s focus on utilising government-owned assets efficiently and enhancing services for the public while creating new income streams.
